ABOUT THE ARTIST

ANTON BOUWER

Welcome to Bou Art – where you’ll encounter my original creations, conceptualizing a steampunk aesthetic in once-off metal and assemblage art pieces as well as functional design projects consisting of my ideas, background and interests.

“BOU” pronounced bow, as in bow and arrow, is a type of acronym/pun that plays on my surname, Bouwer, while also pointing to the Afrikaans word “bou,”meaning, to build. And that is exactly what I do as a South African metal sculptor and assemblage artist – I build – with my imagination, with my hands, with my heart and with my soul.

I live in Mossel Bay, a beautiful coastal town in the heart of the Garden Route of South Africa.  My career as an auditor spans more than twenty years and I also worked as an artisan, but in my heart I am a musician and an artist – which I trained for after school and I cherish the years that I played in a brass band. I still sing whenever I can as I love the energy of live performance.

Each artwork is sub-consciously chosen and created with the end product in mind, a process I thoroughly enjoy. Although I create pieces that fall within specific categories, I never repeat a work of art, maintaining its uniqueness among my collection and keeping investors’ interests in mind.

I seek to create art and objects that instil in the observer a stirring feeling much like experiencing something for the first time.
